Ways in which a sense of mystery and enigma are created for the audience

The Matrix:

• In the opening scene of The Matrix, there is a sense of mystery created firstly by the alternating green digits at the very start of the movie. 

• The audience is not yet aware what is happening, and then one by one the columns of numbers stop alternating and stay on a number. 

• This makes the scene enigmatic as the audience does not know what this number is or what it will lead to. 

• The conversation between two people over the phone furthers the sense of mystery as they are talking about murdering someone.   

             



Fargo:

• The opening sequence of Fargo begins with the main protagonist driving through the snow with the opening credits layered over the top.

• Part of the mystery is slowly cleared up when it is revealed that the car being towed is what this man is delivering. 

• However, as the conversation continues more mystery is created as it is revealed that this man wants ti have his wife kidnapped and that he cannot say why he needs the money.
