Outline of the opening sequence

A brief outline of my opening sequence

The initial idea for my opening sequence is that there will be a man embarking on a journey in his to a mysterious place where something unthinkable ends up happening to him with the opening scene ending just as it reaches a climax and the audience is able to sense that something awful is about to happen with the first few minutes of the film building towards this moment.

Here is an initial plan of my opening sequence:
  • The protagonist leaves his house and get in his car
    • he is about to embark on a long journey to visit a friend
  • Whilst he is driving, the suspense is building with different camera shots from a number of different angles and the music increasing in volume and tempo to add to the suspense.
  • Find a location to add to the mise-en-scene by looking deserted and rural.
  • Suddenly, his car breaks down and he has to get out of the car in the middle of nowhere to see what the problems is.
  • This is when the music will reach its climax and the second character (the antagonist) will be introduced.
  • The opening sequence will end with the antagonist about attack the protagonist.

The effect of ending the opening sequence like this is that it engages the audience and retains their attention as they want to find out what happens to this man and how the story develops. Peoples opinions of films are often formed in the first few minutes of viewing it which is why a well thought out and high quality opening sequence is so important.
