Ways in which locations are introduced to the audience

Spectre:
  • One convention of films either in opening scenes or when a new location is being established is to have text on the screen to tell the audience exactly where they are in order to avoid confusion. However, some movies do not put the name of the location on the screen as they want the audience to start off confused about the location
  • In the case of Spectre, the audience is clearly told that they scene is taking place in Mexico City.
  • The opening sequence begins with a tracking shot of the parade taking place on the streets of the city. This shows a the main protagonists surroundings and gives a sense of what is happening in the scene.
  • The location is introduced in the background as the camera is constantly tracking James Bond whilst everything is happening around him.

Madagascar 2:
  • Madagascar 2 is the sequel to the first movie. However, it begins with an opening scene which jumps back in time to long before even the first movie was based.
  • This style of opening scene gives context for the rest of the movie whilst also hinting that the movie this opening scene will have some level of importance in the rest of the film.
  • In this case, the majority of the movie (one it has reverted to present day) will take place in this desert (sub-saharan) setting.
